Fire at Massachusetts compassionate ministry center destroys cottage

Hingham, Massachusetts

(The Patriot Ledger, February 26) A family that was staying at Washington Street cottage operated by a homeless shelter is again without a place to stay, a fire having heavily damaged the home Friday morning.

Fire Capt. Shane McMahon said the blaze started in the living room of Unit 6, one of the cottages at the Rehoboth House Homeless Shelter at 405 Washington St.

The shelter, operated by Friends of the Homeless, has several freestanding cottages and other buildings. The fire did not spread to any of the other buildings, McMahon said.

Missouri pastor chosen as Citizen of the Year

Piedmont, Missouri

(Wayne County Journal-Banner, March 9) The Piedmont Area Chamber has named  Gary L. Rhodes of Piedmont as its Citizen of the Year. Rhodes will be honored at a Meet and Greet reception Thursday, March 31, at the Nazarene Church in Piedmont.

Rhodes, who is the Nazarene Church pastor, was born in Bonne Terre to Clarence and Della Rhodes.  They lived in Farmington  until Gary was 10 years old.  They moved to Annapolis, where his father was the Missouri Natural Gas employee.

While growing up in Annapolis, Rhodes was involved in many things including mowing yards, baling hay, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, 4-H, playing basketball,  and the volunteer fire department.  At the age of 13, he was saved at a community tent revival on the Annapolis Horse Show grounds.  This led to more community and church involvement, including driving the church bus for Annapolis Church of the Nazarene while in high school at South Iron.
