In an effort to unify and integrate the message that local congregations receive as they participate in supporting the mission of the church, at its September 2013 meeting the Board of General Superintendents decided to discontinue the Office of Advancement at the Global Ministry Center, effective January 31, 2014.

The Office of Advancement opened in 2012 as an arm of the BGS with Dan Schafer appointed as executive director. The BGS expressed appreciation to Schafer for his time of service in this capacity.

A study will be undertaken to determine where some of the Advancement duties will go in the future.
