Duane Baty

Duane David Baty, 69, of Olathe, Kansas, passed away from glioblastoma on 16 October 2024, at home surrounded by his family. He was a retired missionary and minister who served in the Phillippines and Cambodia for 25 years.

He was born on 28 November 1954 to David and Virginia (Wilson) Baty in Marion, Indiana. On 30 May 1975, he married Susan Kay (Brooks) Baty. He graduated from MidAmerica Nazarene College (now University) in 1978 and received his Master of Missions from Nazarene Theological Seminary in 1981.

He served as a pastor at Crossett Parkway Church of the Nazarene in Arkansas from 1981 to 1985. Duane and his wife, Sue, were appointed as missionaries for the Church of the Nazarene in 1984, serving in both the Philippines and Cambodia for 25 years.

The Baty family arrived in the Philippines in 1985 where they underwent two years of language study, helping to translate materials into the Cebuano dialect. Duane served as the missions director for the Mindanao East and West districts, as well as the East, Central, and West Visayan districts. He was a member of the Central Literature Committee of the Philippines and on the parent-advisory committee for an academy in Davao.

Upon returning to the States, he was employed at the Global Ministry Center, serving in the Missions Mobilization department until his retirement.

Duane was creative and enjoyed writing, painting, poetry, and cross stitch. He taught two Sunday school classes at College Church of the Nazarene in Olathe, Kansas. He loved others deeply; his greatest passions were the Lord and his family.

Duane is survived by his wife, Sue; daughters Kendra Brown and Kolene Hintz; three grandchildren; brothers, Robert Baty and Dale Baty; and sisters, Barbara Goodwin and Opal Barclay.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A Celebration of Life for Duane will be held on 26 October 2024 at College Church of the Nazarene in Olathe, Kansas. Visitation will be held at 2 p.m., and the service will begin at 3 p.m.
