Community honors Michigan pastor

Owosso, Michigan

(NCN News submissions) Marlene Webster, pastor of the Owosso City Church of the Nazarene, was chosen to receive the Shiawassee Regional Chamber of Commerce ATHENA Award, an international award presented to an individual who has achieved excellence in his or her business or profession, has served the community in a meaningful way, and has assisted women in reaching their full potential. The Chamber of Commerce became involved in the ATHENA Program in 1988, and the award has been presented locally for 28 years. The Schluckebier/Hood Wealth Management Group of Wells Fargo Advisors of Owosso sponsors the ATHENA Award.

Webster is the founding executive director of Shiawassee HoPE, a nonprofit collective impact effort aimed at supporting Shiawassee County residents in charting a course from poverty to possibility. She serves on several local human service boards, including Shiawassee Health & Human Services Council and the Shiawassee Homeless Coalition. She is also president of the Owosso Ministerial Association, which will organize Walls of Warmth, a rotating winter night shelter for the homeless, January 3 through March 27 at area churches one week at a time.

Earlier this year Webster was recognized by the Michigan Association of School Administrators as a “Regional Champion for Children” for her work on the Owosso Public Schools Board of Education.

The nominator stated, “Marlene is an advocate for all humankind, but she lives by the motto, ‘if you help a woman, you help a community.’ She works tirelessly to advocate for women who are not able to advocate for themselves. She finds homes for families in need, she welcomes students into her home if they are homeless, she provides counseling to those in need, and performs pro-bono funeral services to honor the deceased. She is a champion of all people.”

Webster will be formally honored January 28 at the Shiawassee Regional Chamber of Commerce 2016 Annual Dinner and Awards Night.
