The Verapaz del Norte recently celebrated the organization of the Resurrection Church of the Nazarene in Cakcualtzuel, San Pedro Carchá, a congregation that formed after hurricanes Eta and Iota strongly affected the community of Campur, where its mother church is located.

Many of the members’ homes were damaged, and some were forced to relocate. The tradition of the Nazarene churches in this area is that when someone moves, the church goes with them.

“When the Nazarenes move to a different location, they take their mattresses, their wardrobes, but they also take the church in their luggage,” said Francisco Cho, Verapaz del Norte superintendent. “When they move, they don’t look for a different denomination; if there is no Nazarene church, they open their house to start a new church plant.”

This was the case for the Resurrection Church of the Nazarene. A fellow member donated the land for them to start the church.

“After the floods, this looks like a resurrection of God's work through His church,” Cho said. “This blessing is given as confirmation of Jesus' expression, 'The gates of Hades will not prevail against her' To God we give all the glory!”

During the organization ceremony, Hermelindo Pop, pastor of the mother church, presented the Cakcualtzul mission to Cho for official recognition. That same day, the church board and ministry presidents were installed and given materials that will be useful to carry out their ministry.

“It is a blessing that God has given us to continue fulfilling the mission that He left us,” Pop said. “How wonderful it is to do God's work! God is working for the growth of the Verapaz Del Norte District.”
