Olivet Nazarene University’s Walker School of Engineering is introducing three new academic concentrations within the Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree program.

“We are adding these concentrations in response to many requests from companies and students,” said Shane Ritter, dean of the school. “These concentrations will also open new missioneering opportunities for students who are interested in innovating and designing with a Christian purpose in order to bring hope to those in need.”

The environmental engineering concentration focuses on air pollution control, water and waste management, and environmental sustainability. It creates a link between geological and civil engineering.

The industrial engineering concentration provides a link between engineering and business. It focuses on manufacturing, design and analysis of industrial studies and forecasting models.

The software engineering concentration features courses focused on embedded systems programming and the application of computer science principles. The interdepartmental collaboration between engineering and computer science disciplines is an additional benefit.

Beginning with the fall 2016 semester, students will have the opportunity to take the required courses for each of these concentrations. Courses will be taught in a professional environment by professors with real-world experience. Olivet’s Bachelor of Science in Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, a nonprofit, nongovernmental organization recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.

Along with these new concentrations, Olivet also offers concentrations in architectural engineering, chemical engineering, civil engineering, computer engineering, electrical engineering, geological engineering, and mechanical engineering. Seok Lew has joined Olivet’s full-time engineering faculty, effective for the fall 2016 semester. In addition to teaching classes in mechanical engineering, he will also oversee student research. He is currently completing his work as an instructor with the Harvard Medical School and a research associate at Boston Children’s Hospital, the top children’s hospital in the U.S.

Lew holds a Doctor of Philosophy in bioengineering from the University of Utah, a Master of Arts in theology from Wheaton College (Illinois), a Master of Science in mechanical engineering from the University of Michigan, and a Bachelor of Science in mechanical engineering from Yonsei University (South Korea).
